Olympic hopeful David Adjetey targets medal at World Champs

Weeks after being handed a Rio 2016 Scholarship by the Ghana Olympic Committee, taekwondo player David Koney Adjetey is aiming at winning a medal at next month's World Championship in Russia.

The US based athlete and another taekwondo player, Terrance Tetteh Asare, are among 12 national elite athletes who would receive access to appropriate training facilities, pocket money and limited travel costs to Olympic qualification competitions.

Adjetey, who secured a bronze and the only medal for Ghana at last year’s African Taekwondo championship is currently ranked number 17 in world taekwondo and third in Africa.

After missing out on the medal podium at the 2013 World Taekwondo Championship in Puebla, Mexico, Adjetey told the Graphic Sports that he was working hard to improve on his performance at last year’s games.

The 31-year-old said, "I know with hard work, I will not return home empty handed. I am a strong believer in hard work and so I am working very hard and as at now I have two world class coaches and a psychologist who are preparing me for the competition.

The scholarships form part of the GOC’s goal of assisting elite athletes selected and proposed by their National Federations in their preparation and qualification for Rio 2016.
