The Madagascar Government has approved $104 million infrastructure projects

The Madagascar government has approved $104 million multi-donor infrastructure projects.

An official statement sent to newsrooms Tuesday said: “The related conventions were signed on June 23.”

The first project, involving the construction of one bypass in the north-eastern part of the capital Antananarivo, will address the traffic jams in the city, the statement said.

The bypass

The European Investment Bank and the French development agency (AFD) have pledged $62.8 million for the project.

The 11th European Development Fund is also expected to support the bypass development.

Up to $41 million will be used in the second project; the “Post Disaster Infrastructure Reconstruction”.

It is meant to repair dams and dykes in Antananarivo’s suburbs, which were damaged by floods in 2015.

The maintenance

The initiative also targets the maintenance of parts of the national roads serving the capital’s main arteries.

The biggest project in the package is the repair of the Fianarantsoa-Manakara railway in the south-east.

The stretch is vital for the over 200,000 local residents who solely depend on rail transport.
