The rainstorm struck the capital and the central part of the country for four days, Ghana’s National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said on Tuesday confirming the death toll.
“In total, there were between 10 and 12 including eight children. Most of the victims drowned during the rains,” Sandy Amartey, Regional Coordinator for NADMO told AFP.
A year ago, about 154 Ghanaians died during a serious flood in the capital Accra which was coupled with an explosion of a fuel station where people had gathered to seek refuge from the rains.
This year’s flood is exactly 5 days after the commemoration of the deaths of June 3, 2015 attended by the President John Dramani Mahama and other dignitaries.
A number of forums were also held in the capital to discuss and find lasting solutions to the annual flooding in Accra which is largely blamed on poor drainage systems and sanitation problems.
Ghana’s rainy season is between June and August and NADMO has asked residents to stay away from rivers and low lying areas as the rains persist.
