The Government plans to construct 8,000 new affordable housing units through the Revised National Housing Programme. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to inaugurate the project with a ground-breaking ceremony on Tuesday.

Speaking at the 2nd Green Building and Research Conference in Accra, Works and Housing Minister Francis Asenso-Boakye revealed that this new housing initiative will be a public-private partnership. The housing deficit in Ghana is currently estimated at 2 million.

The previous affordable housing programs faced challenges and delays, but the revised program aims to address these issues. The 8,000 housing units will be completed in Pokuase, Ga West Municipality. The government is providing free land and infrastructure, reducing construction costs by 40%. Moreover, the project will focus on using environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly materials.

The total cost of the project has not been disclosed yet. The 2nd Annual Green Building Conference discussed promoting eco-friendly building materials and green certifications for buildings in Ghana. Only 23 buildings in the country are currently green certified.

The conference brought together experts, academics, and politicians from various African countries, including South Africa and Germany.
