A report by the International Monetary fund on Renewable energy resources in Africa has indicated that the current energy sources are woefully inadequate and unable to meet the energy needs on the continent.
It also has negative effects on the environment ,which are left unaddressed , a situation which makes it difficult to meet the emissions limits for greenhouse gasses set out by the 2015 Paris Agreement. It added that the continent's resources need to change.
Consequently experts and researchers are making a strong case for the shift to renewables sources with Solar leading the energy mix. They indicated that prices for renewable energy have fallen substantially in the past especially between 2010 and 2018.With supply dominated by fossil fuel.Adding that apart from ensuring a sustainable approach to development,it would also generate job opportunities.
The report added that conditions for Solar energy are excellent in Africa, where sunshine is not only abundant but also more reliable than elsewhere. However despite this, successful examples in countries indicate that solar and wind accounted for only 3 percent of power.
It called for investments to address financial challenges encountered by African governments and support from multilateral financial institutions to support investments in climate change.
