Ghana Confirms Marburg Disease

 

Ghana has confirmed two cases of the Marburg disease following the report of the preliminary finding of two cases in the Ashanti region on July 7, 2022.
The disease was suspected following the identification of two persons who met the case definition for acute hemorrhagic reported in the Adansi North District Ashanti region

 


In a press statement issued by the service,it indicated that sfar 98 contacts identified including those from the Sawla Kalba district from the Savannah region are currently under quarantine by the Ashanti and Savannah Regional Directorates respectively.Currently no new cases had been identified.The Ghana Health Service said it collaborated with the Institute Pasteur in Dakar and the Nogouchi memorial institute to conduct the test.

 


The samples were taken to IPD with the support of the World Health Organisation, WHO for validation in line with standard practice, this being the first time, Ghana had confirmed a case.The disease is caused by the Marburg virus, which is a rare but severe hemorrhagic fever that
affects both humans and non-humans. Iit indicated that fruit bats are the natural hosts of the virus and are transmitted to
people from animals through direct contact with body fluids, blood and other discharges from the affected animal or human.

 

The incubation period is 2 weeks to 21 days with treatment being asymptomatic.
Persons who contract the disease may experience fever, bloody diarhoea, bleeding from gums, skin, eyes, nd bloody urine.
