Woke up this morning and realised everybody is doing something I have wanted to do in a long time. Going natural! How did I get passed without realising? Family, friends, acquaintances and celebrities: all going natural. Hair relaxer companies better watch out.
Over the time I have come to admire and envy people who have always kept their hair natural and those who have dared revert to it. Holding it up in enviable styles one cannot help but appreciate.
Celebrities have not been left out in this craze for natural. In Ghana actress Lydia Forson and singers MsVee and Becca have gone natural. They rock it beautifully. Outside of the continent we can talk of singers Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu, FKA Twigs, Solange Knowles and Diana Ross. Actress Viola Davis and model Yaya DaCosta also have natural locks to die for.
But I sit here and ask my self why the sudden craze for natural by ladies? I mean beauty has always been defined in the artificial sense. Sadly though. Permed hair, weave-on, make-up and long artificial nails. Are people redefining beauty in its real sense now? Well I think not.
From observations ladies are going natural because it’s in vogue. Not because they think natural is real beauty or have become aware of the essentials of being natural! How sad I think that it, to follow the masses. Beauty should be how we define it as individuals. There is nothing wrong with going natural but the reason behind our transition is not enough. Natural is in vogue so lets do it. Next, shaving off your entire hair. Lets adopt that too. Are we not losing our identities as individuals? Can we not adopt one definition of beauty and stick to it? If Akua is going for natural, let her. I believe shaving half of my hair defines me, so let me stick to it. Can we actually take such a decision? No. Because once this is trending, I want to be part of it.
Are we as ladies suffering from a personality disorder where do not know who we are and what defines us individually. Can we not create an identity for ourselves and while at it make sure we are very comfortable with it? Yes we can!
If you want to perm your hair, do it and make sure you stick to it! It’s your comfort zone. If you want to keep it natural, be my guest sweetheart. Perming to natural and back to perming it again? Honey, please! Get an identity and feel fabulous about it! An identity that makes you confident in every sense of the word. After all is it not said that confidence is the sexiest attribute a woman can have.
We do not even take our time to know the history and origin of a particular trend before jumping right into it. That is the only way to know if what you are doing is exactly what you want to. Without it my dear, you are copying blindly. Do we suffer an inferiority complex when others are doing it and we are not?
We have people who have gone natural and still fix weave-on from time to time. Seriously, what is that for? (“warris that” as the youth of today say). We are giving up something but not entirely. Well we have issues.
From where I stand, those who go for and preach natural do so in its entirety. Natural hair, no make-up and definitely no bleaching. Feel comfortable in your skin. That is how they define beauty. So you `revert to natural hair, you have heavy make-up on and have obviously bleached. I ask, who are you? Fashion should not contradict itself. Fashion is what you say it is. Not what the world says. Because that might be too uncomfortable for you. Do not force it.
Or are we going for the things that guys presumably want. Because I have seen a lot of guys praise natural these days. If this is our reason, then we are more lost than I thought. No matter the identity you carve foryourselves, feel comfortable in, and for the right reasons, you will find your kind of guy. Our Mr. Right as we like to put it.
We should understand that popular fashion come and go. Remember the days of Afro? Yes, that also passed. So will natural, where next does our train of copying take us?
Rastafarians are one group of people I know preach being natural. And trust me they follow through it. That is admirable. That is who they are and that is the unique identity they have carved for themselves. You can admire and actually adopt it. Butonly if it fits your personality, defines who you are and also if you are willing to adhere strictly to all it comes with.
On the other hand, if perming your hair, wearing make-up makes you feel comfortable and confident, why not.
Do not create a personality disorder for yourself by switching from one identity to the other and back!
Once you go natural, stick to it!
