Rio Scholarship recipient Abdul Wahid Omar

When Abdul Wahid Omar won Team Ghana’s second bronze medal in the Men’s Flyweight 52kg division at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, it was crowning moment for him after many years of hard work in the ring.

Omar's rise to fame was dramatic and just reward for his perseverance in the face of a stiff opposition at the SECC Hall in Glasgow, Scotland.

The hitherto unknown of boxer from Paledom a suburb of Accra, rose up to the occasion winning his quarter final bout against Junior Kauko Raka of Papua New Guinea to advance to the medal zone.

Despite losing his semi-final bout against Pakistan’s Muhammad Waseem, he picked up a bronze medal for his efforts.

He was subsequently crowned 2014 SWAG Amateur Boxer of the Year for his herocis.

Now the Wisdom Power Gym pugilist has set himself a target to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games in 2016. He knows exactly what to do to get there: hard work.

“I feel very happy because it is not easy to get this opportunity so I will work hard to qualify for the Olympic Games. I will work much harder now though it will not be easy,” he told www.ghanaolympic.org

Wahid was one of 12 national athletes, who were awarded Rio 2016 Scholarships at a ceremony in Accra in March, 2015. His story has only just begun.
