CAPTION: GIMPA's Solomon Mensah and UPSA's Daniel Ayarna vie for the ball at the tip-off of their encounter.

University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) became the first team to qualify for the 2015 University Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Championship with a 25-20 victory over Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) at their home court in Accra.

The hosts UPSA coached by the experienced Emmanuel Essel Wobil alias Ghanaa won all their three ties to emerge tops of the four-team Greater Accra Zone 1 qualifier organised by Rite Multimedia.

In their first clash, UPSA boasting talented duo, Delvin Bayonne and Daniel Ayarna topped Pentecost University College (PUC) 29-28 before they crushed Ho Polytechnic 28-13 to book a showdown with the impressive GIMPA side who themselves had accounted for Ho Polytechnic 27-18 and PUC 31-27.

In the decider, UPSA coach, Wobil pulled-off a defensive masterstroke over his opposite number, Clement Opoku Adu-Gyamfi as he shut-down GIMPA's most potent attacking threats, Kwame Boama-Djan and Reginald Awuku Boateng in a thrilling encounter.

Interestingly, UPSA trailed 5-6 at the end of the first quarter but rallied off the superb long-range shooting of Kofi Kwarteng and general defensive nous to carry a 21-18 lead into the fourth quarter.

"We got this victory because my team listened to my advice and come April 25 at El-Wak we will be going for the ultimate," said UPSA coach Wobil.
"I have coached most of the GIMPA key-players; Kwame Boama, Jake Morrison and McMartey Lawer, so I devised a strategy to contain them," he added.

GIMPA coach, Adu Gyamfi attributed his side's loss to their failue to utilise their chances especially from the free-throw line. All the participating schools received cash prizes as well as products and souvenirs from Access Bank, EV oil, Everpure Mineral Water, PZ Cussons and telecommunication giants Airtel.

The CEO of Rite Multimedia, Yaw Sakyi Afari said he was impressed with the massive turn-out disclosing that the next qualifier will take place on Saturday at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
